Chiropractic Care and the Immune System

There are numerous research studies which show that chiropractic care has a positive impact on immune system function. Below we will explain just how this happens.

There is a chain of three systems which flow together and work hand in hand to create balance in the body. These systems being the endocrine system, nervous system, and immune system.

Communication between these systems happens through messenger molecules. One of these specifically being the IL-2 molecule. This molecule has a presence in both the nervous and immune systems. Studies show that IL-2 levels increase following a spinal manipulation and thus influence the nervous and immune system responses in the body. (Click here for this research study)

Another group of studies show that several types of immune system cells including phagocytes, neutrophils, and PMNs increase after chiropractic adjustments. (Click here and here to view those studies)

The studies mentioned above address the nervous and immune systems, but what about the endocrine system? The major components in the endocrine system are epinephrine, nor-epinephrine and cortisol. These components are produced in the adrenal and endocrine glands and have direct connections with the sympathetic nervous system. Cortisol is a stress hormone which inhibits the immune system-explaining why stress makes you sick! When the sympathetic nervous system is being aggravated by a spinal subluxation (improper motion or position of a vertebrae), it increases the production of cortisol and in turn affects the immune system. (Click here and here for these studies)

If you or someone you know always seems to be sick, a spinal subluxation could be the root of the problem! Call us today and schedule your evaluation to see if we can help you live a healthier life, naturally!
